What with this whole job search being less a search and more a vigorous hunt, I call my house every day to check for voicemail. And even though I live alone and have for the last year, I always expect someone to answer.
It's very disappointing when I have no messages, but even more so when I have a message and it's junk.

Also, I check my caller ID box even when the 'someone's called you!' light isn't flashing, just in case it missed something.

the "hunt" is a grind, and a pain in the butt. I have several friends out doing the same thing right now - just keep at it.
